Chinese AI Models Surpass US Competitors on Developer Platforms Amid Vicious Pricing War

Chinese AI models from developers like DeepSeek, Z.ai, and Alibaba have surged to majority usage on major API gateways, displacing US models in key markets. On OpenRouter, Chinese models accounted for 57% to 67% of tokens used during the week of September 14, a massive leap from just 6% to 13% in February. Vercel reported a similar trend, with Chinese model usage jumping from 11% in January to 55% in August. Businesses operating in the "Global South" are driving the bulk of this volume, using Chinese models for 67% of their total token consumption on OpenRouter. Two US House Committees have launched investigations into the adoption spike, citing national security concerns over model "distillation" and remote access to Nvidia hardware. OpenAI and Anthropic both recently introduced cheaper tier models to combat the massive price advantage Chinese labs currently hold in emerging markets.
