US Department of War Deploys xAI's Grok to 3 Million Personnel in $200M Defense Push

The US Department of War deployed Starshield AI's Grok for Government on August 31 to serve more than 3 million military and civilian personnel. The platform operates on the department's GenAI.mil infrastructure and carries an Impact Level 5 accreditation, clearing it to process controlled unclassified information tied to national security. Grok's arrival is directly linked to existing xAI contracts valued at approximately $200 million, focusing specifically on autonomous, multi-step agentic AI workflows. The GenAI.mil platform isn't struggling with adoption, having already onboarded 1.7 million unique users in the nine months since its initial launch. By integrating Grok alongside Google Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT Mil, the department is enforcing a multi-vendor strategy to prevent dependency on any single commercial provider.
